The Ruby of Helios by Scott Collins – My Review!!

January 5, 2016 by Bill Stuart 1 Comment

The Ruby of Helios – My Review!

After a long hiatus, I have decided to resume posting my reviews to my blog! I think the last time I posted a review was in 2013, so it just seemed the time to start again. I’m proud to relaunch my blog review posts with The Ruby of Helios by Scott Collins!

The Ruby of Helios Web Cover

I read the first two books of this series (gave them both 5 star ratings), so it was only natural for me to read the third installment. As with the first two, this one was also an excellent read!

Synopsis (from the author):

In their quest to overthrow the reign of the evil King Argyle so they can free their parents and the rest of his slaves, a small clan of youngsters has banded together to reunite the jewels of the Scepter of Harmony.

Having stolen the Emerald of Phaunos and reuniting it with the scepter, they must once again test their skills and resolve as they face the challenge of grabbing the Ruby of Helios from a ruthless band of raiders.

With the diegylis still hot on their heels, the band of rebels navigate the waters of the Great Lake, as well as the scorching desert of the Land of Sands, before facing a tribe of reptilian beasts who would rather die than relinquish the power of the ruby.

Though unexpected help comes from two powerful sources, will it be enough to save one of them from certain death, and the others from overwhelming odds?

Failure is not an option, for if they don’t succeed, Argyle will destroy the scepter, and the kingdom will collapse into ruin.

What I liked:

The characters of Daniel, Aidan, Lilly, Olivia, and Zack are familiar and ones with which I connected early in the series. I enjoyed this particular set of trials, from pirates, and merpeople, to the diegylis, and the threat of Argyle himself. The ingenuity of the characters to exploit their own abilities to help get out of scrapes makes for a fun read.

What I didn’t like:

Argyle, the evil King, seems a little one-dimensional to me. I understand the need to portray the villain as purely evil, but a little more depth, or even some additional background on the King would help frame him better. Other than that, not much to dislike.

Overall impression:

Like the first two books of this series, I truly enjoyed the read. The familiar characters, interesting situations, and the continuing quest to free their world from the clutches of King Argyle make this book an excellent addition to the series. Recommended for fantasy readers of all ages!

My rating:

5 Stars

Give this book a try, but I would say that it would be most helpful to read the first two books of the series first. If you do, please consider leaving a review. I know Scott will appreciate it! Find out more about Scott on his Amazon author page or on his website!

2015 – A Year in Reviews!!

December 30, 2015 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

2015---A-Year-in-Review Fireworks Picture

2015 – A Year in Reviews! 2015 was a busy reading year for me. As an Indie author, I realize the importance of reviews. Reviews provide feedback from readers, give the author a chance to interact with readers, makes new friends, and generally improve his/her writing. In 2015, I decided I would write reviews for all the books I read, post them to as many sites as I could, and try to give constructive feedback to the authors.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I typically buy the books I read so I don’t create any obligation to provide a “good” review. However, since I am trying to help authors, if I cannot give at least a 4 Star review, I try to contact the author directly to offer my comments, rather than post the review. In this post, I wanted to list all my reviews, a link to the Amazon.com review, and the star rating I gave each book. So, without further ado, here is my 2015 review list from newest to oldest!

Born of Water by Autumn Birt – My Review

September 8, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Born of Water!

Born of Water – My Review!!

Born of Water by Autumn M. Birt Cover

I saw some chatter about Born of Water by Autumn M. Birt on Twitter, connected with the author, and took a look. I liked what I found! Read on for my thoughts.

Synopsis (from the author):

In a world controlled by magic, not everyone wants the “honor” of being an Elemental Priestess and becoming a slave to the Church of Four Orders. But when Ria calls upon magic to save her best friend’s life, she discovers there is something worse than being able to control water, air, fire, or earth.

There is another power, one that is forbidden, and its use is punishable by death.

Ria must flee everything she has known to outrun a creature sent to capture those who use tainted magic. Her best chance of success comes in the protection of an outcast Water Priestess who might choose to betray her as much as help.

In a desperate race to save her life, Ria must discover just what is the magic she controls and why the Church of Four Orders wants anyone born with it killed before they capture her.

What I liked about Born of Water:

I enjoyed the way Autumn Birt fleshed out her characters and her descriptions of events and  locations. The sailing scenes were very well done, as were the events in the forest where they meet Darag. I particularly liked the evolution of the relationships among the characters. Some were predictable, while others a surprise.

The narrative itself entertained me and the author’s imagination worked well with the use of the Elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Niri, a Water Elemental, finds creative ways to use her powers to further their quest, and who knows what else they will discover before the quest ends?

What I didn’t like:

I found a few spelling errors that distracted me a bit. Ty’s mood swings and odd outbursts needed some explanation (but perhaps they will be explained in the sequel). More background on each character would have been helpful in understanding the characters actions and reactions.

Overall impression:

Born of Water is a very nicely told story with a fresh take on the four elements, I recommend it to fantasy adventure fans, those who like a little romance, and anyone who is a fan of magic! I know I will read the next installment!

My rating:

4 Stars (out of 5)

Dragon (Histories of Purga, #1) by Rustin Petrae – My Review

July 31, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Dragon (Histories of Purga, #1) – My Review!!

Dragon by Rustin Petrae Cover

Dragon (Histories of Purga, #1) by Rustin Petrae! I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. Since I like dragons, it was an easy thing to agree to! Having said that, I really liked the book. Rustin Petrae did an excellent job of blending sci fi and fantasy into a most enjoyable story.

The novel revolves around the technology loving Rooks and the nature loving Terraquois. A rebel element within the Rooks targets The Rooks’ king’s son, Rone,  for assassination. The attempt appears successful, and Rone crashes his transport in the desert near the Terraquois’ territory. He survives, though, and Keiara and her brother rescue him. This sets the scene for the story!

The book has a bit of romance between Rone and Keiara (the daughter of the head of the Terraquois). It also uses of technology well (especially the nanotech stuff which I personally find fascinating). Filled with intrigue, amazing abilities, and satisfying plot twists, Dragon (Histories of Purga, #1), is a nice entertaining read!

My rating: 4 Stars

Everwud by Marilyn Dieckmann – My Review

July 12, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Everwud!

Everwud – My Review!

This book caught my eye and I had to read the blurb. In spite of the fact it is written for a young audience, I pick it up and added it the the TBR list. Here are my thoughts!

Everwud by Marilyn Dieckmann Cover

A boy, a talking dog, a tree, a treehouse, a castle, and a wonderful story! Everwud caught me by surprise and wouldn’t let me go!

This is a refreshing tale told through the eyes of a 10 year-old orphan. I thought it would be a children’s book, but the story has all the elements of a wonderful book for all ages. With a bit of mystery about Joey’s (our orphan hero) parents, some intrigue about another orphan who lives at the orphanage with Joey, magical charms that help a dog talk, an enigmatic parrot, Joey’s mother trapped in another realm and searching for him, and an all-around good guy who owns a pet shop, Everwud was a most satisfying, quick, and easy read.

Will Joey be able to help his friend and will he discover where his magic comes from? Will he ever be reunited with him mother? Lastly (and maybe most importantly) will they ever finish the treehouse? Read the book to find the answers to all those questions and more!

I recommend this one to middle grade readers, but I think parents will find this a fun and charming book for everyone. I can’t wait to read the next installment of the series!

Bravo Marilyn Dieckmann!!

My rating: 4.5 Stars!

Lantamyra: A Tapestry of Fantasy by Susan Waterwyk – My Review

June 29, 2013 by Bill Stuart 1 Comment

Lantamyra – My Review!!

Lantamyra A Tapestry of Fantasy by Susan Waterwyk Cover

Lantamyra: A Tapestry of Fantasy by Susan Waterwyk was a delightful read! Filled with ruling dragons, magical crystals, and humans possessing extraordinary powers, Lantamyra is an alternate world. Against this intriguing backdrop, Susan Waterwyk constructs her tale.

The story follows the journey of a grandmother and her granddaughter to Lantamyra. Marooned on Earth 40 years earlier due to an accident during which she lost her scepter, Lenora longs to return home. Her granddaughter, Tylya, and Tylya’s boyfriend Josh Hamilton, find the scepter, and it opens a portal to the dragon-ruled world. Josh hitches a ride back to Lantamyra with Tylya and Lenora, her grandmother, and is grudgingly accepted in the dragon’s world – unlike Tylya and Lenora, who are most welcome. From there, the adventures of all three begin as they try to find their places in this alternate reality.

Susan Waterwyk weaves an intriguing tale filled with nice elements of romance, sacrifice, and acceptance. She drops hints of a deeper mystery that gradually reveals itself. You’ll have to read the second book of the series to find out how it all ends!

As an amateur rockhound and collector of gemstones, I loved how they used crystals and the key role they play in the story. Since crystals allegedly have many mysterious properties, it was not a stretch imagining the awesome powers they possess in the book.

The only drawback to me was the pace of the story. It unfolded a bit slowly for my tastes, but that was a minor distraction.

All told, Lantamyra: A Tapestry of Fantasy was an easy and charming read. I recommend it for anyone who loves dragons, romance, love, new worlds, crystals, fantasy, science fiction, and a great story! Well done Susan Waterwyk!

My rating: 4.5 Stars
