The Griffin Cryer by Julia Hughes – My Review

March 3, 2013 by Bill Stuart 2 Comments

The Griffin Cryer

The Griffin Cryer by Julia Hughes Cover

It is amazing how an ordinary act can have extraordinary consequences. This is what happened to Frankie Shaunessy when she tries to call her dog home. Instead, she summons a griffin from another world, complete with his Rider – wearing fancy dress! That is how The Griffin Cryer by Julia Hughes starts!

Frankie is determined to help Balkind, the griffin, and his rider return to their own world. Her efforts, set against the backdrop of a young woman trying to balance school, friends, teenage angst, and a tragic family situation, make for a compelling and entertaining story.

I loved the character development in this novel. Balkind is not your usual griffin. He is sweet and loves attention. His rider is rude and demanding. Frankie’s parents are solid parental types, but have their own issues.  Frankie, as with most young people, is complex and finds that friends aren’t always friends and enemies aren’t always enemies. Romance isn’t always like the movies, and relationships within the family can be difficult. But, in the end, love and friendship always win!

The story itself grabbed me from the start (who doesn’t love supernatural things happening in a graveyard) and kept its hold on me until the end. It follows Frankie’s life from finding Balkind and his rider, through a romance with her dream guy, and back to helping Balkind and the rider get back home. I did get a little confused toward the end when Frankie has to help her brother, but the story sorted itself out.

I think this book is suitable for all ages and all genres. It has some romance, teen issues, paranormal elements, suspense, and fantasy. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this book to be added to your to-be-read pile!

My rating 4.5 Stars!!

The Elven Bow and Elven Sword Gemstones

February 24, 2013 by Bill Stuart 5 Comments

The Elven Bow and Elven Sword gemstones! The front covers of The Gemstone Chronicles books all have the same symbol on them. It is a sword laid across a drawn bow. The sword has four gemstones in the hilt and the bow has places for four gemstones on the upper and lower limbs. The first book The Carnelian, shows only a carnelian and empty spots for the other three missing gemstones. Notice that Book Two: The Amethyst has two spots filled and two unfilled. Do you see a pattern here?

The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian by William L Stuart Cover

Anyway, I thought I would elaborate on all the gems in the Elven Bow and the Elven Sword and what they mean in the books. So, we will start with the Elven Bow and the Carnelian! The Carnelian is the stone of courage in Book One: The Carnelian. Carnelians also have other magical and mystical properties. They have been used to eliminate toxins from the body, fight depression, stop anger, and calm nervousness.

Elven Bow Gemstones:

Carnelian Gemstone

The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst features the amethyst as the stone of happiness and joy.  Among its other properties, the amethyst is a stone of peace and has a calming effect. An amethyst beneath your pillow can ward off nightmares and insomnia. Preventing drunkenness is another alleged property. Many believed the stone could detect poisoning and illness. If the wearer was poisoned, the stone lost its brightness. If the wearer were ill, the stone would pale.

Amethyst Gemstone

The third book of the series is The Gemstone Chronicles Book Three: The Emerald. Currently in the editing and revision stage, I plan to launch the book in June 2013! In The Emerald, the gemstone is the stone of healing. Emeralds restore spiritual balance, bring gamblers luck, and ensure safety to travelers.

Book Four: The Ruby is the final installment of The Gemstone Chronicles series. In the Elven Bow, the ruby represents love. Besides love, the ruby symbolizes royalty and power, dignity, and strength of the heart. Historically, people wore it to provide protection against natural disasters and fight fear.

Elven Sword Gemstones:

The Elven Sword gemstones stay with the sword the entire series. Already in the possession of the Dark Elves (or Drow), the Elven Sword gemstones begin to dominate the separated Elven Bow gemstones. Aquamarine is the first of the Elven Sword gemstones. In The Gemstone Chronicles, the Aquamarine is the stone of wisdom. In Book One: The Carnelian, Beebop and Maggie used the stone to help them escape a difficult situation (I can’t tell without spoiling). Sailors carried the stone to prevent seasickness and drowning. It also happens to be my (and Beebop’s) birthstone!

Aquamarine

The second gemstone in the Elven Sword is the topaz. In the books, it’s the stone of truth. Topaz comes in various colors and many people are fond of the blue topaz. I chose the yellow topaz for the book. Believers say topaz reveals lies, deceit, and gives prudence and honesty to its wearers.

Topaz

The third stone of the Elven Sword is the Garnet. The stone of justice in the books, garnet has a long history of magical powers. Once called the Warrior stone, combatants frequently carried it in battle to prevent injury and death. Believed to bring hope and luck to its wearers, the garnet could even help its wearers gain popularity.

Garnet

The Sapphire is the last of the eight stones of the Elven Bow and the Elven Sword. In The Gemstone Chronicles, the Sapphire is the stone of Power. The sapphire is one of the most useful gemstones and has many magical properties attributed to it. Chief among them is protection against envy, authority, victory (for those pure of thought), and awakening a thirst for knowledge. It was thought to attract friends and repel enemies.

Sapphire

What do you think?

So, there you have it. All the gemstones in the Elven Sword and the Elven Bow. Want to know how I used them in the books? No spoilers from me, you’ll have to read them! I welcome your comments about gemstones and which are your favorites and why!

The In Between by Catherine Converse – My Review

The In Between!

The In Between

By Catherine Converse

My Review

The In Between by Catherine Converse Cover

I had the opportunity to do an author spotlight on Catherine Converse and her YA paranormal novels The In Between and Fade To Silver, a few months ago on my blog. As I read the material for my spotlight, the concept of the book intrigued me and I put her book in my TBR pile. I got the book in January and read it in a couple of weeks. Here are my thoughts about it!

The Review:

The In Between introduces us to Adie, a high school senior with a promising future in soccer. Adie just happens to have the extraordinary gift of dreaming about murders before they happen. She is recruited by an organization – the IPA – to become a Visionary and have her dreams interpreted and acted upon to prevent the murders.

As Adie settles into her new life – deep underground in IPA’s headquarters – she is paired with another Visionary named Dannika. Together, the two slowly forge a bond and work together to help prevent more killings. A shadowy figure who seems to anticipate their intervention in his plans and who threatens their lives, becomes the focus of their work. That is as far as I will go describing the story so I won’t spoil it!

I found the story to be new and refreshing. The characters grew throughout the book and I liked the way Catherine gave them more personality as the story progressed. The introduction of romantic interests adds a dimension, but there were some awkward moments with them such as the first meeting between Jeff (the IPA recruiter) and Adie. Nonetheless, the relationships evolve and become an integral part of the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed The In Between and I bought the second book in the series, Fade To Silver (which I am reading now). Bravo to Catherine Converse!

My rating:

4.5 Stars!!!

Author Spotlight – William L Stuart

February 14, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

William L Stuart (me)!

I am going to post a second author spotlight this week and shine it on William L Stuart (me)! I haven’t really talked about my books on here in a while. Yes, I have mentioned them by and by in some of my other posts, but it just seemed like time to talk about them. I will start with The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian. So here goes!

The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian by William L Stuart Cover

When Aidan and Maggie find a fairy cross while rock-hunting with their grandfather, it’s just an oddity. But when they discover there is an elf imprisoned in the stone and set him free, they and their grandparents, Nana and Beebop, are attacked by Dark Elves and forced to flee to the magical world of Celahir.

In Celahir, Findecano – the elf the children freed from the fairy cross – leads them on a quest to recover gemstones stolen from the Elven Bow by the Dark Elves. Without the restoration of the gemstones to the Elven Bow, the balance between good and evil in Celahir – and the human world – could tip toward evil.

The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst by William L Stuart Cover

In Celahir, the magical land where the Light Elves and the Dark Elves live, the four gemstones of the Elven Bow have been stolen by the Dark Elves. Without those gemstones, the barrier between the human world and Celahir is deteriorating and the balance between good and evil in both worlds is tipping toward evil.

The first of the gemstones, the Carnelian, was recovered by Aidan, Maggie, Nana, and Beebop with help from their Light Elf friends during their first trip to Celahir. Now, the stakes are even higher when the elves return to the human world to ask for help recovering the second gemstone, the Amethyst, and the humans discover that Mike – Aidan and Maggie’s father – has been kidnapped by the evil elf Naesse!

The humans, accompanied by Aidan and Maggie’s mother, Laura, return to Celahir to rescue Mike and recover the Amethyst. All they have to do is defeat the giant that guards the gemstone…
