S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Captives of the Zone By Artur Frank

January 6, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

I have to admit that I am not much of a gamer. Yes, we have always had game systems here at home. We still have an old Atari (with Pong and Pac Man) and have had a Nintendo system, Super Nintendo, PS One, PS Two, a Wii, and an XBox 360 with Kinect. But, I haven’t ever been a big fan of playing games on the PC. Why am I telling all of this? Because today’s review is about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Captives of the Zone, a graphic novel based on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game. I have never played the game and therefore did not know what to expect from a novel based on it. So, please read on for my review!

My Review

Disclaimer: I was given this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I am not a big gamer, so I am unfamiliar with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and other books. Given that, and given that I am not usually a fan of graphic novels, I was unsure what to expect when I started reading this book. Surprisingly, the book was very well written and drew me right into the story. The story is bare-boned and characters are enigmatic by design. With a few illustrations and a narrative that reflects the idea that the novel is a diary written by a captive of the Zone, I found myself immersed in the story.

I won’t give away any of the story, but I would recommend reading this whether you play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games or not. It is a quick read and will leave you wondering what happens next and maybe entice you to play the games! 4 Stars!!

EMPYREAL FATE – High Fantasy Done Well

January 2, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

I have the privilege to read and review Empyreal Fate, the first book of a high fantasy series written by an extremely talented young author named Rachel Hunter. I have long been a fan of fantasy and sci-fi books, and my own books are fantasy adventures novels, so it was a pleasure to discover this novel.

Empyreal Fate – High Fantasy Done Well

Disclaimer: The author presented me with a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

In Empyreal Fate, Rachel Hunter has created an entire fantasy world that simply teems with memorable characters, rich dialogue, and a plot with intriguing twists. The main human characters are brothers, who end up at odds with one another, but the role of their young sister remains a mystery; the elves battle palace intrigue, and unwanted marriage proposals. Intertwined in all of this is the relationship between one of the humans, Darrion, and Amarya, the daughter of the Elf King.

Empyreal Fate is filled with wonder, magic, and many elements that make it a fun and exciting read. I recommend this one to anyone who likes fantasy! As this is the first book of the series, I can hardly wait until the next installment arrives!

My rating: 4 Stars!!!

Empyreal Fate can be found on Amazon.com and is available in both ebook and paperback.

New Toys!!!!!

December 30, 2012 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

New Toys!!

I know I have been away for a while. I have been working on the paperback version of The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst, enjoying Christmas with the grands, traveling to see family in South Georgia, and just generally enjoying some time off. In light of all that, look what I got for Christmas!! Yes, I had asked for a metal detector and a two drum rock tumbler and look what showed up Christmas morning!! I can now work three steps of the tumbling process as the same time. How cool is that? And, I can also take my new metal detector with me when I rock hunt. You never know what you might find. Since I live near a lake, I can explore the shoreline and see what I can find. I am excited to get these new toys for me to play with! Here are a couple of pictures I took of the new equipment.

New Toys Garrett Metal Detector

My new Garret 150 Metal Detector!! Not the most powerful detector, but a good start to a new hobby!

New Toys Two Drum Rock Tumbler

And my new two drum rock tumbler!! I can hardly wait until the next opportunity to go rock hunting!! I can tumble six pounds of gemstones at one time in this tumbler, so it’s time to find more rocks! Now if I can just convince Lana to let me buy a Bobcat….

What did you get for Christmas? Anything fun that you can use for your hobbies? Leave me a comment and let me know!

The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst is launched!!

December 21, 2012 by Bill Stuart 1 Comment

Mayan Apocalypse (or not)!

I launched the second book my my series The Gemstone Chronicles to celebrate the Mayan Apocalypse non-event! Entitled The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst, the book builds on the adventure begun in The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian. Below is a brief description!

In Celahir, the magical land where the Light Elves and the Dark Elves live, the Dark Elves have stolen the four gemstones of the Elven Bow. Without those gemstones, the barrier between the human world and Celahir is deteriorating and threatens the balance between good and evil in both worlds.

Aidan, Maggie, Nana, and Beebop, with help from their Light Elf friends during their first trip to Celahir, recovered the Carnelian – the first of the stolen gemstones. Now, the stakes are even higher when the elves return to the human world to ask for help recovering the second gemstone, the Amethyst, and the humans discover that Mike – Aidan and Maggie’s father – has been kidnapped by the evil elf Naesse!

The humans, accompanied by Aidan and Maggie’s mother, Laura, return to Celahir to rescue Mike and recover the Amethyst. All they have to do is defeat the giant that guards the gemstone…

I launched the ebook on Kindle and Smashwords. The CreateSpace submission for the paperback should happen this weekend, so the paperback should be available in the next few days. Here is the cover:

Author Spotlight – Genta Sebastian

December 19, 2012 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Genta Sebastian and her book The Boxer Shorts Rebellion is my last author spotlight before Christmas. Intended for mature audiences, the book fits in the contemporary literature and thriller categories.

Boxer Shorts Rebellion Cover Genta Sebastian

The Boxer Rebellion tells the story of one teen’s terrifying experiences in high school and on the internet. Nick Clements and his best friend, Penny are besieged by bullies when a rumor gets started that he is gay. Things deteriorate when one of the bullies turns out to be a psychotic killer. CAUTION: People bullied in their teens report being triggered by this story. The novel contains language that is frank, and portrays brutal, even horrific behavior at times. This book is intended for mature readers and is not recommended for children or the very sensitive.

Author Bio:

Genta Sebastian now lives in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, but was born in Kansas and grew up in California. Once a professional storyteller, and now a retired educator, she has authored a wealth of novels and short stories in anthologies, one of which won a Lambda Award in 2007. Her newest novel is The Boxer Shorts Rebellion, a suspense filled thriller.
