Josiah Trenchard Part Two Morgenstern – My Review

June 22, 2013 by Bill Stuart 1 Comment

Morgenstern!

Morgenstern – My Review!!

I read the first novella of Jonathon Fletcher’s series Josiah Trenchard The Might of Fortitude and liked it immensely. So, when the second novella came out, I had to read it, too. I was not disappointed! Josiah Trenchard Part Two Morgenstern picks up where Part One left off.

Josiah Trenchard and the Morgenstern by Jonathon Fletcher Cover

The crew has some new members, but enough of the original crew to make it a familiar place to return. The mission starts off with a bang and never lets up. Josiah Trenchard’s crew has to secure and protect a research facility in an asteroid belt. There, they find a remnant of military research that has been revived. I will leave it there so as not to spoil the story, but suffice it to say that the military grade humor, blood, and gore that were hallmarks of the first installment are present here!

I liked the plot and the multiple subplots that are present in the story. The novella reads nicely as a stand alone work, but leaves you ready to dive into the next installment.

If you are a fan of space science fiction with a healthy dose of military style, check out all of Jonathon Fletcher’s novellas! You won’t be disappointed!!

A Week of Vacation – Panama City Beach, Florida

June 16, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Beach vacation!

I spent the last week vacationing in Panama City Beach, Florida with my lovely and adorable bride Lana and my two wonderful grandchildren Aidan and Maggie (all three inspired characters in The Gemstone Chronicles). Lana and I both grew up visiting PCB (or simply “the beach” in the towns where we lived back then), so it was a nostalgic trip for us, but Aidan and Maggie had never visited the sugary white sands and emerald waters. We had a ball!

Pictures!

We ran through some rain on the way down to PCB, but here is what I woke up to each morning!

Panama City Beach Florida

Being a former US Navy sailor, I also enjoyed the sound of the waves!

We did spend some time on the beach, where Aidan rode the waves and Maggie played in the sand. We managed to mostly avoid sunburn, too!

All that sandcastle building wore me out, so relaxation time!

We didn’t just lay on the beach or swim in the pools at the condo. To experience PCB, you have to get out and do things. We visited Gulf World Marine Park, where we got to pet stingrays, watch sea lions, dolphins, penguins, and macaws, among many other things. Maggie even got to help “train” a dolphin to blow bubbles!

We finished our last day at the beach by riding the Sea Dragon Pirate ship. Maggie became a pirate and took the pirate’s oath!

Aidan didn’t take part in the pirate festivities, but he enjoyed the trip anyway.

Maggie, though, went all out and became a pirate!!

We loved PCB!

We enjoyed great food, visited the new Pier Park, and rode go-karts. I don’t have pictures of that, since we were all riding at the same time, but it was one of the best experiences we had at the beach. It was Maggie and Lana’s first time on go-karts and they did great!!

There were changes since Lana and I had last been at PCB. For instance, The Breakers, an iconic restaurant from our time, is now closed and for sale. There are a lot of high rise condos that block the view of the beach from Front Beach Road. Many of the Mom and Pop stores are gone. But, the spirit of the beach that we so loved growing up still exists and we were very happy to be able to share it with our grandchildren!

Lana and I decided that we need to retire at the beach, so I have to get busy selling a lot of books so we can make that decision occur. Any help with the dream will be greatly appreciated!! 🙂

If you have been to PCB, leave me a comment on your memories. If not, maybe plan to visit The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches in the near future!!

Track Rock – More North Georgia Mountain Adventures

June 12, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

Track Rock!

A couple of years ago, Lana and I were out exploring the north Georgia mountains when we saw a rather unobtrusive sign about Track Rock Archaeology Site. We noted it, but didn’t go looking for it that day. We kind of forgot about it for a while, but then we decided to visit Brasstown Bald (the highest point in Georgia and the subject of a previous post) and recalled Track Rock and included it in our trip. It was a little difficult to find, but worth the side trip!

In The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian, Aidan finds a cache of fairy crosses. One legend of the fairy cross is that they are the tears shed by the Cherokee as they were forced from Georgia on the Trail of Tears. Gold found in the hills led to their displacement. I have some knowledge of the Native Americans in south Georgia (where Lana and I both grew up), mostly due to talking with Lana’s Uncle Bud. Uncle Bud is 87 and is a fountain of knowledge about the settlements in the county where he lives. He has one of the most extensive arrowhead collections around. I’ve also visited the fascinating Kolomoki Mounds site in Early County Georgia (near Blakely).

Despite what I have learned about the Native Americans in the state, I had never heard of Track Rock or its significance. I had no idea it’s considered one of the most significant rock art sites in the Southeastern United States. Experts believe the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans created the art beginning over 1000 years ago.

I know it’s difficult to see the glyphs, so I added this picture of a plaque that gives some details

There was a lot more to see. If you have a chance to travel through the north Georgia mountains, seek out Track Rock and enjoy this site!

The Legend Of Finndragon’s Curse by Richie Earl – My Review

May 31, 2013 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

The Legend of Finndragon’s Curse!

The Legend of Finndragon’s Curse – My Review!!

The Legend of Finndragon's Curse Cover

Every now and again, I find a book that just enthralls me. Such was the case with Richie Earl’s The Legend of Finndragon’s Curse! It was a fun, imaginative, and adventurous novel that I couldn’t put down.

The Review:

The story builds around three siblings who find a clue to their missing father’s whereabouts in his backpack. They follow the clue and discover the entrance to the fantastic underground world where Finndragon’s Curse has kept a kingdom hostage and unchanging for 1500 years. The siblings, Emma, Megan, and Scott – along with their faithful dog Bones – follow the path and land at the King’s Castle. There, they find daily demon attack, people who die and revive daily, and more clues to their father’s whereabouts.

The siblings meet new friends and win a talent contest. I loved that part of the story – especially the use of the cell phone. The King, who knows the children’s father, offers up a group of knights to accompany them. They and their new friends set out to find Finndragon and their father. Here Richie Earl’s imagination really takes over. He develops a fantastic world complete with talking animals, more demons, and more creative uses of a cell phone.

The only difficulty I had with the book was the use of Welsh – but I didn’t mind. Having read a number of novels with Welsh words, I enjoy trying to figure out how to pronounce them. It also made me feel like I was listening to James – the missing father – tell the Finndragon story to his children.

I can’t wait until the next book in the series is released. I will be reading it, so stay tuned for that review!

My rating: 4.5 stars.

North Georgia Mountains – The Setting of The Gemstone Chronicles

May 18, 2013 by Bill Stuart 1 Comment

As readers of The Gemstone Chronicles know, Nana and Beebop’s house in the books sits perched on a mountain in the north Georgia mountains. For those who don’t know, the mountains in Georgia are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (which are part of the Appalachian Mountain chain). While not towering like the Rockies, the mountains can be very remote and extremely rugged. They are also beautiful!

Recently, Lana and I decided to visit Brasstown Bald and see what the highest spot in the state looked like. We were not disappointed!

The views were breathtaking and expansive. On a good day, you can see North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and, of course, Georgia. Rising over 4700 feet above sea level, Brasstown Bald allows spectacular views like the ones below!

North Georgia Mountains View 1
North Georgia Mountains View 2
North Georgia Mountains view 3
North Georgia Mountains view 4

These and similar views were the inspiration for the setting of the four books of The Gemstone Chronicles. I also discovered my fascination with gemstones that are found in the hills. Findecano, one of the elves in the books, was trapped in a chiastolite fairy cross found in the mountains. Fairy crosses are often found in Fannin County, GA, which can be seen from Brasstown Bald. I have found rubies, emeralds, sapphires, garnets, aventurine, carnelian, amethysts, and different other quartz during my many rock hounding trips. I recently joined a gold prospecting group, too, and I am looking forward to finding some of the gold left in the mountains!

The region also has some fantastic homes nestled in the hills. One of those houses became the prototype for Nana and Beebop’s house. I think this one is a bit larger than their home, but what a great place to spend a day. There is even a gold-bearing creek running through the area – the basis for the river running through Beebop’s property.

The House and The River:

There you have it. The North Georgia Mountains and streams that inspired the setting for The Gemstone Chronicles. Feel free to share pictures of the mountains and streams (or whatever else) that have inspired you!!
