Runes and Red Sails – My Review!!

February 9, 2026 by Bill Stuart Leave a Comment

I was intrigued by the blurb for Runes and Red Sails (Queenmaker #1) by Ander Levisay. As I generally do, I found the book on BragMedallion.com and thoroughly enjoyed it. Read on for my thoughts!

Synopsis (from the author):

Aelfhild hates attention. She lives in the shadows, and she serves the future Queen. She keeps out of the way of the current King. And she has, for her life so far, managed to avoid all the backstabbing of the royal court.

But when the assassins come looking for her mistress’ head, there’s only one choice: run. Swept into a world of longships and bloodthirsty raiders, of sky-splitting storms and heaving seas, of old gods and treachery, Aelfhild has to find her footing—and fast. She’ll tangle with scheming lords and stand alongside stoic shieldmaidens. She’ll raise a mug with drunken warrior-poets and set sail for unknown lands with a crew of restless misfits. It’s going to take all the strength and courage she can muster to keep the true heir to the throne alive long enough to see the crown. And more than a little luck.

This is the story of how Aelfhild learned to step out into the light. This is the story of how she learned to stand and fight.

This is her story.

What I liked about Runes and Red Sails:

For a fantasy novel, the book reads much like historical fiction. Aelfhild, a loyal servant to her mistress, was a compelling character. Although quiet, she is adventurous and brave, and her development and growth throughout the story had me cheering for her. Additionally, the surrounding cast of characters, well-paced dialogue, and plenty of action kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy fantasy, the Viking era, storyline twists and turns, and political intrigue, give Runes and Red Sails a try!

What I didn’t like about Runes and Red Sails:

Although it is unusual for me not to find something, I didn’t find much to dislike about the book.

Overall impression of Runes and Red Sails:

I enjoyed the book! Aelfhild was a favorite character, and I think the story captures the harsh, difficult world she lived in. The fantasy aspects were not overdone. Additionally, the action and political intrigue added just the right elements to make it easy to imagine the tale being true. If you enjoy Viking era stories, strong female protagonists, with a satisfying splash of fantasy, read Runes and Red Sails!

My rating:

5 Stars
