Welcome to the home of The Gemstone Chronicles!
The Gemstone Chronicles is an award-winning four book series of middle grades/young adult fantasy adventure novels. Although written for a younger audience, they appeal to adults, too. I invite you to join the adventures of Aidan, Maggie, and their grandparents Nana and Beebop as they venture into the world of Celahir.
The Carnelian is the first book of the series. Carnelians are reddish-orange semi-precious gemstones mostly used for making cabochons today. Historically, hot wax and signet rings sealed official documents. Carnelians were a favorite stone for the rings since hot wax didn’t stick to the stones. In addition, the stones make excellent cameos, beads, and other pieces of jewelry.
The Breastplate of Aaron in the Bible contained a carnelian. Good luck, courage, peace, and happiness are characteristics of the stone. In The Carnelian, the stone represents courage.
The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian is available for purchase in multiple e-formats from Smashwords or for the Kindle on Amazon. Join the adventure today and invite your friends and family along!
The Gemstone Chronicles series is expanding!!
The second book of the series, The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst makes its debut in early December 2012. Below is the cover!!
The Amethyst follows Aidan, Maggie, Nana, Beebop and the children’s mother, Laura, as they return to Celahir to fight a giant and rescue Mike (Aidan and Maggie’s father). Despite Laura’s opposition, Aidan becomes the companions’ champion. He bravely faces Brendan (the giant) in a series of challenges to determine their fate and the fate of his father!
Amethysts are among my favorite gemstones
I find a fair amount of amethysts during my frequent rock hunting trips and have tumbled a few in my rock tumbler. Mostly, though, I collect them for faceting. The specimens I have range from pale lavender to a deep purple. I have one that weighs in at a whopping 732 carats. Sadly, it is too fractured to be of value, but it makes a beautiful paperweight. All told, amethysts are simply gorgeous stones!
Historically, people believed amethysts could ward off drunkenness and protect the wearer from poison. Catholic bishops often wear the stone. For them, it symbolizes humility, sincerity, and spiritual wisdom. As with the carnelian (from Book One: The Carnelian), the amethyst was part of the Breastplate of Aaron. In The Gemstone Chronicles Book Two: The Amethyst the stone represents happiness and joy.
Today, we find amethysts in rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings – virtually any kind of jewelry. They vary in color from pale lavender to the deepest purple. Exposure to high heat or natural radiation changes the color.

Book Three: The Emerald is now available!!
The Gemstone Chronicles Book Three: The Emerald is now officially part of the family! Released as an ebook on June 6, 2013 and as a paperback on July 27, 2013, it joins the first two books of the series! The books chronicle the adventures of Aidan, Maggie, Nana, and Beebop and their elven friends in the magical land of Celahir!!
The Emerald follows our intrepid crew’s continuing adventures in Celahir. After defeating Brendan and recovering the Amethyst, they now head deeper into Celahir to rescue Mike from Maeva’s clutches. After a fateful encounter with the witch, Aidan and Maggie have to muster all of their courage and skills to rescue their friends and family. If they can do that, they may just have a hope of recovering the Emerald!
Emeralds are my favorite gemstones
Perhaps it’s my Irish ancestry as the green reminds me of that fair green island. Maybe it’s because they are my lovely wife’s favorite gems. Whatever the reason, the deep green of the stone is mesmerizing.
I’m not the only one who thinks about emeralds this way. Historically, emeralds are the traditional birthstone for May. Many believe emeralds hold different magical and mystical properties. For instance, people believe emeralds help with love, bring success in sales, and neutralize negative influences. In different religions, emeralds play a large role. Green is the holy color of Islam. In the Catholic Church, green is the most natural and elementary color in liturgy. Emeralds have a long history of use for healing such ailments as colic, burns, and headaches among others. In ancient times, the stones were ground into fine powder and used as an eye lotion.

The cycle is complete!
The Gemstone Chronicles Book Four: The Ruby is now available! The final book of the series finds our heroes returning to Celahir to search for the final gemstone, the Ruby! Held by the terrifying cherufe, Aidan, Maggie, Nana, and Beebop must retrieve the gemstone and restore the balance between good and evil in Celahir.
Rubies are my second favorite gemstone.
The red version of sapphires, the gems are extremely hard (9 on the Mohs scale). In addition to their hardness, the beautiful deep red color of the most prized specimens make it easy to understand the stone’s appeal!
Our friends over at Wikipedia tell us the ruby is aluminum oxide and the red coloration comes from chromium. All natural rubies have some imperfections. However, if the stone has rutile inclusions, the ruby can be cabbed (made into a cabochon) that highlights the rutile in a star pattern. Interestingly enough, rutile is titanium oxide, the same mineral used to make white paint.
Over the centuries, rubies and passion and prosperity complemented each other. Rubies and love have always been connected. The red stone is July’s traditional birthstone, but makes for wonderful gifts for any occasion! People believe rubies sharpen focus, reduce the fear of evil, and guard against physical and psychic attacks. Emeralds, sapphires, diamonds, and rubies are precious gemstones. Their rarity, color, and monetary value set these stones apart from others. For this and many other reasons, it seemed an appropriate stone with which to end the series!

The book, like the others in the series, is also available at BarnesandNoble.com and many other retailers!
Lastly, I want to thank each and every reader, reviewer, and friend who helped make this series an incredible success!!
